Ongniud Banner wins WRCA record title for its largest yellowhorn planting base

July 10 03:06 2021

On May 15, 2021, the 18.67 square kilometer yellowhorn planting base was certified by the WRCA, a brand under the UK-based World Record Certification Limited, as the world’s largest at the opening ceremony of the first Ongniud Banner Yellowhorn Cultural Tourism Festival in Ongniud Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China. A world record certificate was presented during the ceremony.

In the history of Ongniud Banner, there were originally scattered wild yellowhorn (botanical name: Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge) fruit trees. Yellowhorn fruit is resistant to cold, drought and barrenness, insects, diseases, and salt-alkali. The tree age can reach more than 200 years. It has extremely high ecological and economic benefits. In the late 1950s, the Ongniud Banner government began to develop yellowhorn fruit as a pioneer tree species for sand prevention and control; in the early 1960s, an economic forest farm was established to develop the yellowhorn economic forest. In recent years, as the bio-energy value and edible and medicinal value of yellowhorn have been continuously explored, the Ongniud Banner Committee and the government have listed yellowhorn as the focus of forestry development in the whole banner.

Yellowhorn, also known as goldenhorn, is a beautiful and unique edible plant that is native to northern China. It is a deciduous woody perennial large shrub or small tree slowly growing to 24-feet tall. Yellowhorn fruit is green, round to pear-shaped, and up to 2.5 inches (6 cm) long. The fruit splits into three sections to release the seeds. There are 6-18 seeds per fruit, and each seed is about the size of a pea 0.6 inches (1.5 cm). The seeds are brown to purplish in color.
